As regular readers will know I have a habit of drifting off topic, but I hope you’ll forgive me just this once. I’ve been AWOL from these hallowed halls hand in hand with Irene over the weekend, and thinking some idle thoughts whilst I was at it.
Wall Street is of course under water metaphorically, but what if it were literally under water too? It seems that’s just what would happen “from a Category 3-4 hurricane hitting just south of NYC.”.
Whilst we’re in a speculative mood, what do you think would happen if a Category 3-4 hurricane headed instead for a GE Mark I nuclear reactor containment vessel built to withstand winds of 128 miles per hour?
IRENE BECOMES POST-TROPICAL NEAR THE U.S./CANADIAN BORDER. THE TROPICAL STORM WARNING FOR THE EAST COAST OF THE UNITED STATES HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED. ELEVATED WATER LEVELS ALONG THE COAST OF NEW ENGLAND WILL SUBSIDE OVERNIGHT…
I’m confident that NYSE has a pretty good DR plan in place such that they would be able to continue as business as usual, even if you don’t. Assuming that your server sitting near the exchange handling your trading strategies doesn’t make it….
While this might be a bit off topic, wouldn’t having a discussion about how you plan and handle DR for your servers that are just off the floor in a leased space be of value?
As to your speculative question…
The storm itself isn’t going to be the issue. Its the storm surge that could have an impact depending on its location. Also the location of the back up generators….
Thanks for your input. Do you suppose Black Swans travel in pairs? My question wasn’t entirely rhetorical since:
1. Here’s a recent picture of Secaucus Road, where Equinix NY4 is located:
1. Katia is currently on a track slightly to the north of Irene’s, and is currently forecast to become Cat 3 on Saturday.
Her storm surge certainly could ultimately have an impact somewhere. Does anyone know where NYSE and/or NY4’s backup generators are located, for example?
