My quick review of Open Quant without C# and VB.NET source

My quick review of Open Quant without  C# and VB.NET  source

So I downloaded this Open Quant software which is pretty decent. For the price, I find it quite substantial where you get to learn about market connectivity, some basic quant algos, and graphic capabilities.  The price is $749 per year for upgrades which might be worth it for a ‘casual’ user or a newbie learning about this field. The one thing that is appealing is this all done in C# so a Java guy like me can quickly learn about it. VB.NET may help too.

Anyhow, I am no expert in the quant field but have read enough books to know what to look for. I also quickly looked at this since I know what to expect when you view the extensive capabilities from something like Matlab. Anyhow, I find it quite limiting but for the price of Open Quant, it might be worth the price to look at.

I still feel Matlab mixed with Visual C++ is the way to go with any quant research and prototyping. Just look around on this blog to see what I am referring. I do like Open Quant but it might be what I am looking for at this point. I need a more open source C# project but there seems to be many of those online.

The Open Quant API is quite useful with lots of classes available to do what seem like technical analysis with oscillators, MACD, Bollinger Bands, etc. I was quite impressed with that but again, I would not move forward on a purchase due to Matlab fills my needs. Matlab seems more advanced as well as Open Quant seems to be geared to newbies or individual investors instead of professional institution traders. I never see Open Quant as a job requirement but seem to see Matlab everywhere. You knew that right?
