INSTANT Instructions to get Python Data Science working on Mac

Instruction to get Python Data Science working on Mac

I have a set of instructions to get you up and running with Python fairly quickly and easily. The sad part about it is that Windows is not really built for Python.
To take full advantage of it with an easy installation process, you do need a solid package manager at your operating system level. Both Linux and Mac OSX
 has it but Windows does not have one  which makes life difficult. This is why I kept stumbling in terms of trying to get an environment up and running on Windows.
Quite frustrating nonetheless. As I am I now a very happy a recent Mac owner, I can see the process to install Python is indeed much easier now. So I have put
together a set of instructions with a video to get you started today.

Are These the easiest instructions to get a full integrated Python development for data science and quant trading research?

Are These the easiest instructions to get a full integrated Python development for data science and quant trading research?
Geez. After my recent horror of R, I decided to (YET AGAIN) give Python a chanceso here we go so far so good. Follow these instructions which help with minimal efforts:

I got the best development Python environment with Anaconda with Ipython. I followed these instructions for Window 8.1

https://www.python.org/downloads/

Download Anaconda which includes all dependencies you need at:

http://continuum.io/downloads

This includes a launcher for Spyder 2 which is the best IDE for data science which seems to include numpy and pandas which are popular Python modules for data science. I was able to confirm all modules included by running with my Spyder Ipython console at:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/739993/how-can-i-get-a-list-of-locally-installed-python-modules

Run:

import pip
installed_packages = pip.get_installed_distributions()
installed_packages_list = sorted(["%s==%s" % (i.key, i.version)
     for i in installed_packages])
print(installed_packages_list)

From there wanted to intall modules for Quandl and my MYSQL so

Need to install Boost on your Visual C++ and Visual Studio ? Follow these instructions

Need to install Boost on your Visual C++ and Visual Studio ? Follow these instructions

You don’t have to “install” Boost in Visual Studio. What you need is to point your IDE (in this case Visual Studio) to the folders which contain the Boost headers and the lib files (if you have built Boost – some Boost libraries are header-only, some need to be built). Take a look at Boost Getting Started for further details.

Quick start:

  • start your command prompt and go to the folder in which you have unzipped boost
  • execute bootstrap.bat
  • execute “.\bjam –build-type=complete stage” – this will build almost everything in Boost.

Note: make sure you have the VC++ compiler and linker in the environment variable PATH.

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3529163/install-the-boost-library-in-visual-c-2008

Updated:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2629421/how-to-use-boost-in-visual-studio-2010

  1. Unzip Boost into a new directory.
  2. Start a 32-bit MSVC command prompt and change to the directory where Boost was unzipped.
  3. Run: bootstrap
  4. Run: b2 toolset=msvc-12.0 --build-type=complete --libdir=C:\Boost\lib\i386 install
    • For Visual Studio 2012, use toolset=msvc-11.0
    • For Visual Studio 2010, use toolset=msvc-10.0
  5. Add C:\Boost\include\boost-(version) to your include path.
  6. Add C:\Boost\lib\i386 to your libs path.

How to create a Github repository with these simpler instructions despite whatever else you read online #github

How to create a Github repository with these simpler instructions despite whatever else you read online #github

These are the steps for Windows users just to create a simple repository. I wish this could be done with a GUI client or at least show how its done. Watch this video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAWiXbT599E

Download mysgit. I tried the Github for Windows and it just failed at all levels. Once mysgit is installed, right click to on your project folder, choose Git bash here.

Also, create your repository on the guthub.com through the admin panel. You should get a a series of instructions once you enter the name and description. Follow these in your Git Bash

touch README.md

git init

git add README.md

git commit -m “first commit”

git remote add origin https://github.com/user/project-repository

git push -u origin master

Note you can also ‘git add .’ for everything.  This seems to work

See what I add to my add Github account in coming weeks by joining my frequent newsletter

IMPORTANT UPDATE:

I could not get the above working on either Linux or Windows. It is 2012 you know. Anyway watch this video as it should help:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pp2S2lHjzZI

Also, when right clicking on your folder, you can synch as but ensure to enter in correct remote Github URL. This may be an easier to do it using Tortoise Git
