Is the QNAP Turbo NAS a solid device for HFT with potential Linux, Windows Server, MYSQL Server, VMWare HyperV virtualization
First off, I have no affiliation with any of these companies mentioned.
So today I went walking into my Canada Computing supermart asking some tech question. I was taken over to this QNAP Turbo NAS box which I must say is very sweet. It is a self contained NAS unit that can handle over 15 TB of space with 4 external drives. It also includes your basic operating system like Windows Server or Linux which would includes MYSQL Server as a data store. Wow! It also includes your packages for FTP, printer server, and other environments including a Python or Java runtime environments. Did I mention these can all be shared among one system? It is also VMWare or Hyper V ready for virtualization. This is really good but the only two drawbacks are:
1. It is a ATOM processor which could be kind of slow
2. The price might be hefty for those but the ones I looked at ranging from $800-$1100 each. You are still saving on the software and hardware alone!
As for high frequency trading potential, I would recommend this for developing/testing only. If the regulators step in to delay all trades by a few seconds, this box could potentially be useful for even a production environment. Notice I say potential only. This would definitely be a decent fit for my potential Trading-Shim which uses MYSQL as the backend for data store of market ticks.
This could get very interesting with this device.
