Oracle makes it real easy to get into developing with TimesTen in memory database with this free Virtual Box appliance!

Yikes. I don’t need to go crazy downloading and installing stuff individually. It is all in one source here:

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/databaseappdev-vm-161299.html

This is realy smart as it includes everything I need and already preconfigured:

  • Oracle Linux 5
  • Oracle Database 11g Release 2 Enterprise Edition
  • Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database Cache
  • Oracle XML DB
  • Oracle SQL Developer
  • Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler
  • Oracle Application Express
  • Oracle JDeveloper
  • Hands-On-Labs (accessed via the Toolbar Menu in Firefox)

Let’s see what happens when I play with it.

Check out these Apple Ipad for rapidly visually developing  a trading or quant model to export into Matlab or R Programming Language

Wow. I am glad  I got the new Ipad 3. Check out these apps available for rapid model development after seeing something in symbolic notation:

Visually export your model/algo with Pi Cubed App:

http://www.sunsetlakesoftware.com/picubed

$15 to do export visual algo to plain text for import into Matlab. This can export to Latex as well.

CAS Calc P11

http://itunes.apple.com/app/cas-calc-p11/id453071113?mt=8

http://powerapp.ch/en/apps/100-cascalcp11

This is more sophisticated but kind of like MuPAD for the Ipad. $15 again

Both have Youtube videos to demos each which is quite stunning to rapidly develop your algo! Very cheap too. I will do a review of each to let you know what I think.

The hard part would be to be import Latex into Matlab or MuPAD but there does not appear to work. I posted a few questions around but you can dynamically link your R data objects into Latex using Sweave though. That is too bad this is not possible but the above is good enough for rapid research and prototyping.

Quant development: Any opinions on what programming language to use when developing a trading system?

Any opinions on what programming language to use when developing a trading system?

I was asking myself the same question while looking for Trading platform. I’m in favor somehow for C# because it is really open for your own development and you can somehow put old C or C++ code in a kind of wrapper to support it. If you don’t have already a trading platform, take a look at Ninjatrader or WealthLab which made the transition to support C# in the past. I would not recommend to start with a proprietary language like EasyLanguage (Tradestation) because it is not really open for future developments -that’s my personal opinion.

We are in the same boat. I can confirm big wigs like Ernest Chan uses Matlab for research using C++/C# Interactive Broker API. We are probably going the same route as most large firms use this combination with an Excel front end.

I am developing a custom model which is a forex robot based on volatility and Bollinger bands

I am working on a new custom model which will remain proprietary for now. As I cannot really publicly talk about it but I will mention that it is:
1. A forex robot with based on volatliy
2. Blends two ‘newer’ technical indicators with a Bollinger band clone
I plan to have a Tradestation and then release a Matlab version which will be part of my Premium Membership service. Register here for a free trial.

Man, I am trying Adobe Flash Builder 4. I have no idea what is what, but adding one piece of code into an mxml in Flash Builder breaks it. What a pile of poo!
The following breaks a standard Flash Builder 4 file.

Marketing Quant apps for Apple’s new iPod Touch, iPhone, iTunes is not easy for us indie guys!

Developing and marketing Quant apps for Apple’s new IPod Touch, iPhone, and iTunes is not easy for us indie guys!
I just got a note from Twanda who has got his quant application into Apple’s iTunes. Here is what was said:
My day count app is now on the iTunes store. I hope it has all the date features a quant would want, and I hope you will like.

Meanwhile work continues on the real product.

Thanks for publicizing my work.
He also needs to fix his spelling on the third word as he would upset a few women. Don’t worry, I thankfully noticed that one.
Anyhow, you can search around on this site for what application it is. I was not given an app name.

You might also want to check out the CFA iPhone app. Could be close for quants.

As Apple released their new iPad Touch and .TV products, I am very interested in finally getting into this world. I find the iPod Touch very appealing as I am not a fan of coughing up $700 for an iPod or iPhone. I don’t like cell phone three year contracts either.
Back to this iPhone app marketing. I came across another fine article at QuantNet.com where some Master of Financial Engineer decided to go into being an iPhone app start up. I don’t find it encouraging with comments like:
Developing an app isn’t just about having a cool idea and programming it. If you intend for it to be a source of income, you need to deal with all of the other business aspects that go with it— legal, business, project management, personnel management, marketing, etc. It is true that there are many hats to wear, and if you are the type of person who can juggle hats, you just might succeed.
That’s a big help to an entrepreneur because starting a business is very stressful. And if I cannot raise or earn money from the business, I will have to find a job at some point.
Other app developers’ say that the number one thing that increased downloads was being featured by Apple in the app store.
And blah blah blah more quotes found here:
http://www.quantnet.com/from-financial-engineering-to-iphone-app-development
I personally don’t find that encouraging unless you are building a brand and extend it through mobile apps like iPhone or Android.
