Trading Strategy Debate High Win-rate or High Reward-Risk Ratio

Interesting how you need to change your think on systematic trading

Facebook comment:

Very nice blog, thanks for sharing. Just one sentence I don’t agree with.

“there is room for mistakes and unexpected events, which by the way do happen from time to time”

It actually does not happen from time to time, it happens often, several times a day. That’s why positive RRR aiming is a must.

Debate of Torch Lua vs Tensor Flow Keras for ultimate machine learning

Debate of Torch Lua vs Tensor Flow Keras for ultimate machine learning

There seems to be a debate of these two frameworks:

  1. 1. Redis 4 with Neural module and embedable Lua scripts make this combo ultimate fast with no latency unlike TensorFlow as a bloated framework.
  2. 2. TensorFlow is accused of being slow so you can compare by searching online for it.
  3. 3. Will  Torch in Lua be much faster than TensorFlow in Python? Apparently a big yes from the Reddit postings I have seen. It is just not as mature which means migrating a potential model into a live trading environment might not be so easy from TensorFlow. This is the issue I face.
  4. What to do?

As I approach a more serious deeper machine learning investigation, I will see where everything is at then which could be a couple of more months. Torch may be more mature with better integration with Redis.

  1. It might be best to use the potential Redis TensorFlow module combo but that seems premature. Find the link below. I will wait it out to see how this Redis module develops.

HFT & Algo Trading Regulation Debate in India

The HFT & Algo Trading Regulation Debate in India

It is is starting to speed up the importance of these topics within the regulatory body of India

You have to be really skilled to enter this market as well as have an appetite for the risk. But in India, HFT has grown, especially as some of the global players have opened offices there for proprietary trading. A lot of the increase in volume is coming onshore.”

If you have not seen my recent video on this exact presentation I want to propose for this Meetup, I would recommend you attend. I already had a ‘lively’ debate on Twitter on the merits of R. I am still not convinced compared to other languages. Let’s have an open debate when all these important languages should be used for what conditions of your trading.

NOSQL vs SQL Server OTLP debate

NOSQL vs SQL Server OTLP debate

A Youtube comment came in:

So were you comparing the speed of streamInsight to sql server in retrieving 1.2 million lines?  And are you saying the server is faster?  If so I am confused, aren’t they used for different things?  I thought streaminsight is really for real-time data stream processing and CEPs.  I am not trying to be a smart*** I am really trying to understand because I am in the same boat as you and this real-time processing thing is still new and it seams many people who claim to know much about it are also still confused.  What I am looking at currently is streamInsight vs. In-Memory OLTP features of sql server 2014.  Have you looked at that and do you have an insight to share.

StreamInsights is sort of dated now. OLTP seems to be Microsoft’s answer to NOSQL. As for me, I just use Redis with new clustering and failover which appeals to me. It is also in-memory and true open source which is free. It is good stuff!

Interactive Brokers vs Oanda WIndows vs Linux debate

Interactive Brokers vs Oanda WIndows vs Linux conclusion

This need to be addressed for the long run.

I must say that the options for Java using the Oanda API is primitive. I mean really primitive where there will be loads of trial and error I am not willing to put in. Let’s check out some examples from Oanda’s Github repository.

I just see some streaming and exchange rate examples which is not very useful. To be honest, I like the full self-contained example apps from Interactive Brokers or IQFeed provided to make life so much easier. Oanda does not provide anything like this outside of examples on GitHub. I am not interested in the REST. Another interesting fact to be questioned.

They say your account is secured during the transaction over the net. When you look at what hackers can do, I must say this is unnerving. Anyhow sending it like this makes me wonder but I cannot say if Interactive Brokers is any better when it is sent from TWS.  Here is their spiel in the lengthy posting.

Do note I address a conclusion on top of my feelings on the Windows vs Linux debate. Check it all out here.

Remember, I am investigating all my algorithms I have available including all Matlab and R scripts that I have compiled over the years.

Bryan

Questions for Meetup on .NET front end high speed charting vs open source R Java Python OpenGL debate

Anyone got any experiences with they would like to share:

  1. .NET charting with SciCharts, Lightning, DevExpress, or even Infragistics (Feb 3!)? Any library missed?
  2. Java is severely limited but anyone using JFreeCharts or JavaFX?
  3. R seems to only have 1 option with quantmod? Any other R packages I should care about?
  4. Python newbie here? Matplotlib? Cairoplot? PyGal?? Chaco? PyChart? Anything missed?
  5. Anything useful in OpenGL for trading?
  6. C++: Qt as in QWTPlot or QtiPlot, GNUPlot? MathGL? GigaSoft for Windows? KDChart? ChartDirector? ROOT Data Analysis? Anything missed?
  7. Anyone ever thought of deploying Matlab as a potential charting optio for end target deployed system?
  8. Open ended for ideas or suggestions?
