Are these valid reasons why VMWare sucks vs Microsoft Windows Hyper-v for virtual cloud computing

This is from a Facebook follower:

It’s old and bloated. Overpriced. Requires a brick and mortar $3k min class to get certified in it. The list goes on and on………built on java……….and so forth. It’s being perpetuated that its not expensive and compares with Microsoft pricing, which is absolutely baloney man. When I see those ad’s at the airport…..it blows my mind that people actually believe that propaganda.

Cloud computing is changing the hedge fund landscape – what drives more and more hedge funds into the cloud?

Cloud computing is changing the hedge fund landscape – what drives more and more hedge funds into the cloud?

Vinod Paul is a technology specialist in the hedge fund space, having advised directly on technology infrastructure implementations for over 600 hedge funds during the last 15 years.

In this Opalesque.TV interview, Vinod Paul discusses the impact of cloud computing as it re-shapes the global technology landscape in the hedge fund space. Just 2-3 years ago, traditional technology systems such as OMS, EMS, PMS, risk systems or disaster recovery, required a fund to spend $200,000-$500,000 – to provide an institutional level of service to investors.

According to Vinod Paul, cloud computing is now “leveling the playing field” for the smaller funds to compete for institutional allocations. Small funds are now able to scale and implement all institutional level service applications by placing systems in the cloud, and managing and adding applications easily in a fast, scalable, and cost-efficient way to meet institutional priorities of recovery, mobility features, and high availability systems.

Learn about how the cloud has streamlined operational processes please watch this video: http://www.opalesque.tv/hedge-fund-videos/Vinod_Paul/1

Is cloud computing worth your high frequency trading?

My answer is simply no. Allowing third party hosting or day service companies to your data is dangerous,. It makes you vulnerable. I have found a decent vendor for suppliers with cheap hardware. They are off lease dell servers from Stollard technologies. Once you build out your network, you can rest assured you have more control. Also make sure you have a decent network admin to build your firewall controls and the like. It is also important you can trust them so get full control on your environment.

The Rise of Cloud Computing for Quant Development on Wall Street

The Rise of Cloud Computing for Quant Development on Wall Street

Looking to cut their capital expenditures on servers and applications, financial services firms are warming up to private clouds run outside their firewalls.

As Wall Street continues to struggle with volatile markets, uncertain global economic conditions and vanishing profits, many firms are looking to reduce their capital expenditures. Targeting the costs of building data centers and maintaining server farms, more and more Wall Street organizations are looking to outsource pieces of their infrastructures to the cloud.

While all of the largest financial firms already are experimenting with cloud technology in non-production areas such as server provisioning and storage networks, most remain cautious about security and refuse to let client data leave the relative safety of their own facilities.

After facing sluggish profits and lower trading volumes last year, however, Wall Street firms are looking to convert large, up-front “cap-ex,” or capital expenditures, into more variable “op-ex,” or operational expenditures. As financial firms react to tighter IT budgets and the pressure to allocate resources to developing new products and entering new markets, the adoption of third-party cloud-based applications and services is expected to gain momentum in 2012.

Financial Services Cloud Computing

Financial Services Cloud Computing

In this subgroup, we will discuss cloud computing platforms in the financial space. One example is to let funds run their trading algorithms and software on a private cloud and rent computing power the same way you do on Amazon or Google’s public clouds. This is different from “colocation” where stock exchanges rent server racks to big quant trading shops so they can execute microsecond trades fas

One does not preclude the other. While VM latency will never get where physical can go, it can be optimized and improved compared to current “Cloud” installs.

Who uses cloud computing for their R calculations?

Who uses cloud computing for their R calculations? I have been using R lately but my calculations take lots of time. Any suggestions?

Before you do anything fancy, it might pay to look at your code for time-consuming spots. Circles 2, 3 and 4 of ‘The R Inferno’ might be of help in this regard. http://www.burns-stat.com/pages/Tutor/R_inferno.pdf

You might look into Rhipe http://bit.ly/kQ2u3y. It does work (after you clean up the code for other inefficiencies).
—–
I agree with optimizing your code to run faster. However, if you still need more power, Microsoft offers their cloud service (Azure), which may help. Check it out here:
