Apple Swift 3 basic notes

This is a hodge podge of note taking

Test Swift REPL

Hello World with Package Manager

swift package init

Understand Package manager

Also from my Stackoverflow query

It seems Apple changed this line:

swift build -X

This no longer works to create an Xcode project as described here

Doest anyone know the updated way to do this as I cannot find it online

Now you should use the Swift Package Manager.

To create a project structure:

swift package init --type executable

swift package init --type library

To make a project compatible with Xcode:

swift package generate-xcodeproj

Because of this command to create an XCode project, goto

git clone
swift package generate-xcodeproj

You can now build the project from within Xcode but if you modify a new Package.swift with:

import PackageDescription

let package = Package(
name: "MongoKittenTest",
dependencies: [
.Package(url: "", majorVersion: 2, minor: 0)

You need to run ‘swift build’ in a terminal within the sources directory to include the modules as part of the build process. You get an error like ‘No such module…’

You could create main.swift in Sources folder with source code:
import Foundation
import MongoKitten

When you in a terminal in the Source folder:

ryans-MacBook-Pro:MongoKittenTest quantlabsnet$ swift build
Compile Swift Module 'MongoKittenTest' (2 sources)
Linking ./.build/debug/MongoKittenTest
bryans-MacBook-Pro:MongoKittenTest quantlabsnet$ ./build/debug/MongoKittenTest
-bash: ./build/debug/MongoKittenTest: No such file or directory
