So I have got big time into MATLAB as no different in the past. I would recommend going to the Mathworks.com recorded webinars to figure out where to start. It is also great way figure out where to start with strategy development. I would recommend you go follow my YouTube videos:

Also, if you see any of these features in R, let me know as I would like to do a comparison. These include the MATLAB System Identification and Symbolic Computing toolboxes. Does R have these kind of packages?
