In what ways has Big Data had an impact on your organisation for quant analytics?
I was going to make a joke, but on a more serious note…
Big Data is nothing more than a tool set that companies can use to pull data from sources which would not easily fit within a traditional rdbms and the level of effort and costs to pull value from the data would exceed the value in the data.
Using tools like Hadoop and ‘commodity’ hardware has reduced the costs and simplified the effort, allowing for value to be pulled from the data.
Looks like 2012 is going to be the first year that this hits mainstream. So you’ll see companies that in 2011 did PoCs going in to development and production. You’ll others start to look at the capabilities and invest in PoCs.
You can do a lot w $250K in hardware. (Which is more than enough to build a large DW cluster.
Not to mention that Hadoop is an either or proposition. You can still use Hadoop as part of your existing BI Strategy.
NOTE I now post my TRADING ALERTS into my personal FACEBOOK ACCOUNT and TWITTER. Don't worry as I don't post stupid cat videos or what I eat!
