Indian Hedge Fund Industry
I would be keen to hear your thoughts on the Indian Hedge Fund industry. Who are the major players? What are popular / profitable strategies? What’s regulatory landscape like?

Any inputs, links, research papers, publications etc. will be highly appreciated.

Many thanks

www.indiacapital.com is one of the oldest hedge fund investing in India.
Also it is the best performing hedge fund. Thanks to Dr. John Thorn, Founder and Fund Manager of the fund.

Indian Hedge Fund Industry is in Infant Stage and has long way to go.
As India is slowly but surely becoming small part of Global Fund Managers Investment Portfolio, it is correct time to look at India.

Global ETF Managers are also Launching India Dedicated ETFs which is another source of big Money. Some call it HOT MONEY but I feel it is here to stay.

I have worked closely with few asset managers focused on India and they tend to be based in US/UK and few in Singapore and India. I have to say that private equity is more popular than hedge funds in India and this is partly due to the regulations. If you are looking at exclusive India focused hedge funds then i dont expect the number to be quite significant. These hedge funds usually have a master feeder structure.

That said, India has always featured in portfolios of large global macro funds and they normally take the exposure in the form of a participatory notes (P-Notes). I think the regulations surrounding the issuance of P-Notes may have changed recently. Happy to discuss

Will it be possible to get a study/research paper on the Hedge Funds Space in India?

There are a few investment funds in India who have been in the space for a while but these are limited in their scope and operate more like mutual funds. With improved infrastructure and financial sophistication in the Indian consumer, we should see an increase in the different types of strategies employed as well.

However, if the aim is to simply run a fund, you can do so from India (as far as ops are concerned) and register within the Caymans or BVI. Is anyone aware of any tax / other benefits that HFs / HF investors might avail of if they are based in India?

NOTE I now post my TRADING ALERTS into my personal FACEBOOK ACCOUNT and TWITTER. Don't worry as I don't post stupid cat videos or what I eat!
