Auto trading platform/tool for personal account for quant development

Sorry if this has been bought up before. I wonder whether I can get some suggestions on a good automated trading platform for a personal account? A personal account that is mainly for testing some ideas in the real market; so ideally the platform would enable a strategy backtest, implementation (doesn’t matter what language it’s in) with automated execution and of course the cost shouldn’t be too high for a personal account. Ideal markets would be equity and fx.

It’s ok if it’s a spread betting platform but most of spread betting tools are not automated.

It depends on the instruments you’re going to trade. For fx you can start with Metatrader, however its backtesting has severe flaws, you can find a lot of information about it on relevant forums. Then Ninjatrader and Multicharts maybe as universal platforms — however you will need a demo account at a broker which is able to work with those platforms. Then you may want to have a look at Thinkorswim, although I must confess that I’ve never tried it seriously myself

Try Fidelity’s Wealth Lab Pro.
Buena suerte, muchacho!

For FX:
1. MT4 (however, the flaws Alex mentioned are no good if you’re heavy into back-testing and optimization) (language is MQL)
2. Strategy Trader – this is FXCM’s proprietary platform for auto-trading. Only FX at this point, but for back-testing and optimization, you’re hard-pressed to find another platform that does it as well as Strategy Trader. (language is C#)

Tradestation.com I’m using it since May 2010 for automated futures trading. So far so good. Another solution to consider: Interactive brokers with Multicharts. MC is not free, while you can use TS for free.

for anything requiring customized solutions, my preferred platform is NinjaTrader…what’s great is that it’s free for coding and back-testing complex (.NET) strategies with all the bells as whistles :

NOTE I now post my TRADING ALERTS into my personal FACEBOOK ACCOUNT and TWITTER. Don't worry as I don't post stupid cat videos or what I eat!
