Latest comments from Pracplay owner on ‘open source’ Glean and Tradelink with free vs paid

Glean is actually free to use, you only pay after your strategy has made actual money.
For the vast majority of users, if you program a strategy manually in tradelink it’s going to be extremely slow and you will have no guarantee your strategy will be profitable. We allow you to build any number of strategies for free extremely quickly, test and trade them for free with some included buying power. And then when your strategy is proven to make money you can scale it up to trade as much of the market as you can profitably trade.

In terms of speed, a new user trying to use manual strategies will take weeks or months to write one strategy. An experienced user will take days or weeks to write one strategy. A new glean user can build a strategy in a couple of hours or days. An experienced glean user can build strategies in 30 minutes or faster.

Glean designs are free to build, test and trade. You only pay when you’ve already made some money and want to scale up your strategy to larger capital.

The reason to use Glean :
1) you can build strategies in minutes and hours without any programming background (instead of requiring a programmer who requires days and weeks to implement strategies)
2) your strategies are guaranteed to work the same on every broker and on the simulators
3) no charge to build or test strategies
4) free commercial support
5) the ability to unlock to received the source code for any design, and thus be 100% open source if you need it (eg if you have raised outside capital for a hedge fund and you want to be able to tell investors you have control over your infrastructure without having to capitalize this cost upfront).
6) extra features not available in tradelink, like advanced order/risk/position management, advanced bar support, and more.
7) your designs will scale up to trade on many hundreds of symbols per machine, so you can trade the entire market with one or just a few machines (depending on what asset classes you trade).

Glean and tradelink are still alive and well.

Pracplay maintains broker connectors for clients and Glean users.

For open source connectors, we push changes back to tradelink.org on a regular basis, usually quarterly.

For proprietary connectors, we still distribute binary connectors with glean but we removed the code from tradelink on the request of some of the proprietary trading firms we work with. We can still make the code available to Glean clients who do a design unlock.

We also removed quotopia from the source as we converted quotopia into a Glean design. This is better than the old quotopia because now any user can customize their quote screen infinately without programming. You don’t pay to test or trade Glean designs unless you’re already making money and ready to trade with serious capital.

ASP we removed from the open source tradelink because Glean users were confused by the term response, and because of some differences between responses and designs (designs generate responses, but responses can’t create designs). For consistency ASP now refers to designs, but we don’t distribute this as open source because designs are not something you can create with the open source tradelink.

We’ll do a write up on the community blog to explain this.
