Helpful Tips for Morgan Stanley Java job interviews with resources for Hibernate, Spring, Collections, Generics

My Morgan Stanley is ony 24 hours away. This is with a high profile vice president out their New York City headquarters. I must say I am quite nervous prepping for this interview. As you know, the end result can easily change your life. The job would be in Montreal but that is ok since I am already in Canada.

So how am I boning up for this interview? Since it is Java based where Hibernate, Spring, and MQ Series are required skills. I am obviously focusing on these areas. My Java code knowledge is decent as I have worked with it for over 7 years. Here has been my plan of attack:
1. The Spring in Action book is quite good for picking up Spring knowledge. VisualBuilder.com has an excellent started Spring tutorial on general Spring programming with direct injection as well. The book I recommend also highlight aspect oriented programming and other important topics that detail the Visual Builder tutorial. This book is also pretty well the standard in learning Spring.
2. If you want a very fast way to learn Hibernate. The best online tutorial I can recommend is Pookey for the United Kingdom. I know his nickname is funny but this tutorial is quite effective. It starts here I believe:
http://pookey.co.uk/wordpress/archives/60-hibernate-with-mysql-a-beginners-guide
As said, this is a very effective tutorial which is easy to digest and is a complete end to end tutorial. It does not go into great detail but it will give you a very quick overview of the general features of Hibernate with Maven, annotations, and other solid topics.

As I have mentioned in a previous post, Java data structures is a very important topic in these Morgan Stanley interviews. I can personally confirm that from a previous Morgan Stanley interview. So what is the best resource? I would easily say the standard Kate and Bert Sun Java Certification Program book they wrote. Again this is another standard if you are going for your SJCP. It can be found at:
http://www.diesel-ebooks.com/cgi-bin/item/parent-9780071591065/SCJP-Sun-Certified-Programmer-for-Java-6-Study-Guide-Exam-310-065-eBook.html
Just make sure you know two topics here that are critical for you success. Learn the collections inside out, understand hash and equals() very well, and generics. Chapter 7 is the one to focus on. Also, understand the basics of Threading to from Chapter 9. These are important topics that will be discussed in your interview.

Next topic will cover the more advanced data structure topics you will not really find in books or ebooks. I will list some online resources that should help to understand Java data structures.

Despite the good chance that I’ll look like a total fool, what the hell is going on here?

It sounds to me (someone that knows nothing about anything related to trading), like you have a failsafe way of earing bajillions:

Day Plan of mejalx:

8:30am: Alarm goes off. Hit snooze and roll over.

8:39am: Alarm goes off. Hit snooze and roll over.

8:48am: Alarm goes off. Hit snooze and roll over.

8:57am: Alarm goes off. Turn off alarm and turn computer on.

8:58am: Log on to trader sites, open platforms, run self developed automated trading strategies.

8:59am: Set alarm for 10am and return to bed.

10:00am: Alarm goes off. Hit snooze and roll over.

10:09am: Alarm goes off. Turn off alarm and move computer mouse to disable screensaver. Check profit.

10:10am: Smile to self with knowledge of $10,000 earned already today.

10:11am: Crack fingers together and say “Ahhhh, another fine day of work.”

10:12am: Working day finished, try to find a way to spend stupid amounts of money.

In any case, I don’t think that there exists an easy, foolproof way to earn butloads of money without lots of luck, otherwise loads of people would be doing it, and it wouldn’t be profitable anymore.

TL;DR – what is automated independent retail traiding?

I code forex strategies for MetaTrader, but I find that it’s difficult to develop a profitable automated strategy using those tools.

How does someone like me, with a general knowledge of technical analysis and some coding skills, but no advanced math background, get into quantitative trading? (I’m assuming that’s what you do?)

What instruments/markets do you trade?

I think the quicker you get away from traditional technical analysis, the better. While I think people can make money in many ways, technical analysis is outdated, and we have the computing power and knowledge for better models. I think you need to start approaching the market from a different angle, focus on developing strategies that are not based on charts.

I mostly trade equities and some options, with some futures sprinkled in (mostly SIFs and currencies).

How to be a profitable trader according to Ernest’s Chan Quantitative Trading (build an algo trading business)

How to be a profitable trader according to Ernest’s Chan Quantitative Trading (build an algo trading business)

I finished this book by Ernest P Chan who wrote Quantitative Trading: How to Build Your Own Algorithmic Trading Business
This will hopefully be the last of the books I look at for a while. I have looked at so many books about .NET, C++, Java, etc I feel like I am becoming a library.
Anyhow, the author Ernest Chan is a local boy from Toronto who seems to make a name for himself in Quant scene. He also has a PHD from Cornell University. You cannot knock him on that but his view point’s seems to make it sound like a PHD won’t make you any better of an indie trader. I don’t think swing traders and day traders need to apply at this since quant trading is totally different from fundamentals. We are not talking about pushing buttons on red down and green up arrows.
Ernest has brought about some interesting topics I am a little unknown which of course. This includes the Sharpe Ratio, Kelly Formula, and others. He also focuses on Matlab quite a bit for developing backtests and models and strategies. He offers some in his book as examples
This is the closest book I have come across for launching an indie business for a trader who wants to focus on quant. The only dilemma I have with this book it is very high level and does not go into much detail in certain sections. Of course, you can always use Google to expand your research on the topic you need to know about. As said, his book is really good at describing how the real world works within Quant and how strategies and models are ever so important to build profitable trades and orders.

Question: You said that last year you made a little under 7 figures net. According to $800,000 at $.02 a trade would make for $4,000,000 gross. Are your expenses/taxes really that much? Are one of those numbers misleading? Or is my math wrong? (I wouldn’t put it past the last one. This is why you are making money doing this and I am not.) Edit: based on 250 market days.

Yes, those numbers were for last year. I’ve since steadily been trying to ramp up my volume and am now at those levels. Also, that is round trip volume (which determines the commission rate I pay), so cut that in half.

Early on, I was in nasty drawdown period and I was having trouble figuring out what was off. I made the same mistake virtually all traders make, I caved to the vast collection of trading psychology books. When the guy mentoring me found out what I was reading, he gave me the following gem: Only pikers worry about psychology, either you have an edge and you exploit it, or you don’t have one and you lose and chase every other excuse.

More Exceptional C++ by Herb Sutter is not another 2nd part rip off book to improve you programming skills to get another job

More Exceptional C++ by Herb Sutter is not another 2nd part rip off book to improve you programming skills to get another job
As I said, this is another another one of those rip off book extending from a previous one. This is just as critical in owning if you really want to pass those hard to achieve a successful career in C++ development.
Let’s start breaking down the book shall we?
The author seems to have a secret love for generic programming with the Standard Template Libary. In a nutshell, you will get further drilled on all the containers like vector, deque, set, and map. You will also learn about lazy optimization and even more exception safety(including reasons for constructor failures) within C++. Another important interview item is the pure and impure virtual functions with controlled polymorphism. If you ever want to design wonky code, this book will show you how to do recursive declarations and simulating nested functions (WHY? I HAVE NO IDEA) but it can be done just like in Java. This also goes into unused C++ features like macros, typedef, namespaces, forward declaration and #definition.
The one section I really admired in this book was on C++ serialization for multi threaded environments. There were three separate appendixes for this which included a break down on the different types of mutexes and atomic routines. It even showed test results of all the different atomic functions instead of using mutexes. These appendixes talks about the classic ‘copy on write’ techniques used and how to properly implement synchronization techniques.
All in all, this book and Exceptional C++ are critical books to read to modernize your skills if you want to get a slick career in C++. C++ can be a complex language but both these introduce complex concepts of the programming language as well breaks it down for you if you are unaware of certain topics. I would definitely compare these books to the Java series of learning from Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates.

Exceptional C++ by Herb Sutter will be most useful for any advanced C++ programmer or developer

Exceptional C++ by Herb Sutter will be most useful for any advanced C++ programmer or developer

A couple of things about this book and author Herb Sutter you should know about. When I found out the author was from Toronto, I was hoping that would have been a great local hook up Sadly, he has moved on to living in Seattle working for some small unknown software company called Microsoft. He has been there for over eight years as an architect which is pretty impressive. Also, he also sits on a lot of the C++ Executive Coding Standard meetings. Nice.
Ok onto this book. When I first start reading, it was more treated a like a test of 47 detailed level questions on C++. It was at the beginning difficult to wrap my head around the concept of items instead of reading in a chronological order like any other software engineering book. Strange as it was but quickly got used to it.
Now let’s start breaking down what you can expect in this book. There were some surprising sections on iterators, unknown secrets with strings or generally using generic concepts. This will help build your knowledge in designing and implemented smart reusable and extensible. Just think of this another way to keep your job or maybe even get promoted. One important section was the detailed briefing on making sure you understand how to write exception safety code. I don’t know of a lot of books that describe at the level of detail in others. Other sections focus on the importance of smart inheriting for easy to work with object orientation. Also, expect to see a new concept this author which he introduces you to which he calls the Pimple Idiom. This should be thought of as an adapter design pattern. Other sections include smart memory management, auto_ptr, casting, the truth of Booleans.
So ask yourself again, why are you not reading this book to enhance your potential with C++ ?

Mark Joshi’s C++ Design Patterns and Derivatives Pricing Is the book critical to your potential Quant interviews

Mark Joshi’s C++ Design Patterns and Derivatives Pricing Is the book critical to your potential Quant interviews

This book was the one that gelled everything for me. I must I was mightily impressed how simplistic the writing was in terms of merging the complex math algorithms needed to merged with knowledge of C++.
I have read some criticism of author Mark Joshi’s way of writing. This was mentioned in the Wilmott forum which kind of surprised me. I was astonished on some saying it was written in an old school way. I kind of disagree as Joshi present complex topics in a fairly easy to consume way. The style of type of the book alone is important as it is double spaced so you are not sleeping away while reading.
As for the content, it well developed as it starts each chapter with a basic lesson in each mathematical presentation of the C++ equivalent. Don’t worry, the book does not go in to detail like John Hull, but it is important to know that the brief introduction gives a deeper understanding as you tackle the C++ code.
Joshi starts with a very simple Monte Carlo simulator and starts to build on each section. He does not believe duplicating code (unless for optimization reasons), as code reuse is important. This includes using the standard object orientation and encapsulation, inheritance, and virtual functions.
As I started researching what kind of interview questions you will be expected to know, the chapters explaining virtual destructors is critical to understand the core of a potential interview questions. Joshi explains this flawlessly.
As for further progress of chapters, Joshi adds to the Monte Carlo simulator to use any kind of pricing engine for exotic options like Asian or the like.
The one that is so critical to understanding how Quant systems are developed are the solid understanding you will need for current enterprise level system design. These topics include which design patterns you need, decorating, random number generators, templates, using factories with wrappers, easy exception handling, and interfacing with Excel. These topics are very critical if you want to fly through your initial interviews. Remember many companies will put you from anywhere from two to eight rounds of interviews before you get a job offer.
I do believe Joshi’s book is a compulsory reading if you really want to get through a tough interview process at an investment bank or bulge bracket.

Hull vs Wilmott to determine those tough quant algorithms, models, and other number crunching

Hull vs Wilmott to determine those tough quant algorithms, models, and other number crunching
Starting out in Quant? Which books are best to start with? Ok. There are only two to choose from. I mean, I have only dove into two. There are three highly recommended books to start with.

They include
Options, Futures, and Other Derivatives with Derivagem CD (7th Edition) by John Hull
Where do I start on this? This appears to be the easier of the books that I was introduced to. His latest includes updates on the recent financial crush. This includes how to work in emerging markets like China or India. The one thing I like about this book is its ability to keep things simple. Learning quant aint’ easy so don’t think you will pick it up in the first read. It will take at least two or maybe three. This is very heavy math. Unless you have a background in it like physics or engineering, this will be a very steep learning curve. The book alone is about 800 pages from what i remember so this is definitely not light reading.

Paul Wilmott on Quantitative Finance 3 Volume Set (2nd Edition)
Paul Wilmott has got something going on as compared to John Hul.. In my mind, both could be considered God fathers of quant by authoring these books. Althought Wilmot has about 1200 pages in this three volume set, you will find it very overwhelming as compared to Hull. As said, start with Hull’s book first as it is easier to lump. Wilmott introduces all the same as Hull but it is at much more overwhelming as less simplistic approach. I am not knocking Wilmott’s book, but understand it seems to be more of an advanced book in the last two sets. Just understand, serious quants will use this as their bible. Get this once you earn your chops later in the game.
