R in Finance Meetup? Apr 24 at 7pm, New algo/strategy online course coming for HFT traders

Sent to my Meetup members:

Hello there

If you are interested in R programming for Finance, you should attend this presentation on April 24 in Toronto. Alon has already presented to this group and got rave reviews from the audience. He will go through the advantages of R and the benefits for finance. Here are the details for the Meetup.

http://www.meetup.com/quant-finance/events/50588142/

Be there or be square. If you don’t know, let me know if you would be interested in attending the R in Finance conference in Chicago which is mid May.

http://quantlabs.net/blog/2012/04/who-is-going-to-r-in-finance-good-introduction-to-this-language-and-potential-for-quant-analytics/

The group location may move in May. I am working on a new algorithm/strategy course for HFT traders  so I may introduce that in a future live Meetup. More presentations may evolve out of that.

Thanks Bryan

Why Parly Company SA, a family office based in Geneva, has fundamentally changed their attitude towards hedge funds

Why Parly Company SA, a family office based in Geneva, has fundamentally changed their attitude towards hedge funds

Peter Fletcher is managing director of Parly Company S.A., Geneva, Switzerland, a family office which invests internationally in alternative investment strategies as well as private and direct equity. Since the mid 90s Parly has been heavily invested in hedge funds, and in fact also seeded a lot of managers.

In this candid Opalesque.TV BACKSTAGE interview, Fletcher explains in detail what is behind that attitude change and how many of his peers have changed the way how they invest.

To know more about Peter Fletcher and these fundamental paradigm changes in the family office

Peter Fletcher has over 30 years of international experience covering a broad spectrum of financial management functions in the trust and banking industry. However recently, Parly as well as other family offices have fundamentally changed their attitude towards hedge funds, along with significant alterations of investment structures, operations and arrangements used when investing in alternatives.

Cloud computing is changing the hedge fund landscape – what drives more and more hedge funds into the cloud?

Cloud computing is changing the hedge fund landscape – what drives more and more hedge funds into the cloud?

Vinod Paul is a technology specialist in the hedge fund space, having advised directly on technology infrastructure implementations for over 600 hedge funds during the last 15 years.

In this Opalesque.TV interview, Vinod Paul discusses the impact of cloud computing as it re-shapes the global technology landscape in the hedge fund space. Just 2-3 years ago, traditional technology systems such as OMS, EMS, PMS, risk systems or disaster recovery, required a fund to spend $200,000-$500,000 – to provide an institutional level of service to investors.

To watch Vinod Paul’s discussion on Cloud Computing please visit: http://www.opalesque.tv/hedge-fund-videos/Vinod_Paul/1

According to Vinod Paul, cloud computing is now “leveling the playing field” for the smaller funds to compete for institutional allocations. Small funds are now able to scale and implement all institutional level service applications by placing systems in the cloud, and managing and adding applications easily in a fast, scalable, and cost-efficient way to meet institutional priorities of recovery, mobility features, and high availability systems.

Learn about how the cloud has streamlined operational processes please watch this video: http://www.opalesque.tv/hedge-fund-videos/Vinod_Paul/1

Hadoop and software upgrade for quant development?

Hadoop and software upgrade for quant development?

After reading the documentation, it seems it’s necessary to bring down all services to upgrade Hadoop. I’m curious if there are any schemes to either leave certain nodes active while upgrading the others or to design the environment in such a way that non-stop operation is possible while still being able to upgrade?

Reason for asking is because requesting downtime from various businesses is sometimes very cumbersome, especially if they share the cluster and cannot afford downtime all at the same time.
Thanks

Hadoop used to be very strict about running mismatched versions NameNode would refuse to accept DataNode with even a differnt minor version. These restrictions have been relaxed so you can rolling update DN and TT is most cases. However SPOFs still cause issues when you really need to drop the NN or JobTracker. The best way to handle this is make the driver of your application logic that is idempotent as possible, and have it retry.

essentially:
done=false
while (done){
testHadoop()
doMyThing()
done=true
}
Some of our applications also have a global MAINTENCE_MODE flag we can set administratively. So we set, wait till running jobs die down, restart.

Quant Analytics: Profitable strategy but no capital… Now what?

Quant Analytics: Profitable strategy but no capital… Now what?

(This is a hypothetical, but I’m wanting to know what the process is)

Let’s say I have a successful trading strategy which has back tested nicely, walk forward analysis show great promise, and have an impressive Sharpe ratio, but like the title says I have no capital. What is the process of getting people in to invest?

I have seen a couple of people looking for strategies to put capital towards, but how does this work? Is it a case of providing an API to submit trades (like Collective2.com) or is it more of “here is my source code”? If it is the former, are there risks with reverse engineering the trading system from the signals? If it is the latter, are NDAs signed and do they work?

Has anyone gone down this road who can provide any advice?

(I originally posted this in the “Prop Traders” group but for some reason it’s not showing up, so I thought to cross post here)

(1) Make sure the idea is sound and makes sense to explain to an intelligent investor

(2) Trade it will your own money, using small-sized orders .

It will be easier to involve investors.
